Resplendent Quetzal
(Pharomachrus mocinno)

This male Quetzal (pronounced ket-SAHL) is the fabled bird of Central America, found only at high altitudes (as here in the cloud forest of the Monteverde reserve). The male is unmistakable, with a helmet-like crest and tail streamers extending its overall length to just over two feet.
